Learner satisfaction: second highest value in 8 years

The Learner Barometer 2023 from professional.ch, a Yousty AG company, shows the second-highest value for learner satisfaction since 2015. The decisive factors here are the respect shown and the team in which the learners work. A good salary alone is not enough.

Trend of general satisfaction interrupted

Learner satisfaction scores 3.88 out of 5 in 2023, slightly lower than in 2021 (4.15 out of 5). Although a decline is evident for the first time since 2015, this year's value is still the second highest of the five previous surveys.

The proportion of learners who would choose an apprenticeship again has fallen from 80% to 69%. Thus, around 7/10 learners would currently choose the apprenticeship path again.

These industries polarize

Banks and insurance companies are in first place among apprentices, IT, communications and the Internet are in second place, and metalworking and mechanical engineering are in third place. The electronics sector has suffered the greatest loss. It drops out of the top 3 this year.

According to Rafael Giobbi, Head of Education Services at Swiss Banking, the positioning at the top of learner satisfaction is not without reason: "The introduction of the certification system for practical trainers, initiated by the Swiss Bankers Association, has created a groundbreaking opportunity that enhances the quality of training in training companies. Banks that belong to this certification system are required to provide proof of quality, which ensures that trainees are working in an environment that is conducive to learning and can reap the benefits of these first-class training conditions."

Respect and a good team are more important than the salary

The apprentices see the salary as the third most important factor for satisfaction during their apprenticeship. Even more important, however, are the respect shown to them (1st place) and the fact that they feel comfortable in the team (2nd place). A positive working atmosphere and varied activities are also very important to the apprentices and fall into 4th and 5th place. The picture is similar to that in 2021 and it is once again clear that it is primarily interpersonal interaction and the working atmosphere that are decisive.
