Groundbreaking ceremony in Baar for innovative waste disposal

From January 1, 2025, waste management in the canton of Zug will be handled by electric vehicles. Construction work begins in Gulmmatt above Baar: The Zug-based company R. Hürlimann Transporte, which won the cantonal tender for ZEBA Zug, is working with Risi Immobilien and convoltas to implement the innovative site solution, which will have a signal effect for the public sector.

"We are delighted that we can start the construction work in Gulmmatt," says Martin Uhr, Managing Director of convoltas AG. Together with Cantonal Councillor Adrian Risi, ZEBA Chairman Walter Lipp and Reto Hürlimann, owner of R. Hürlimann AG Transporte, Martin Uhr is standing on the Gulmmatt, just above Baar, on this late summer morning. His gaze is fixed on one of the largest solar installations in the canton of Zug. This was completed by convoltas on the Risi Immobilien AG site in 2021. It produces around 1.8 megawatts at peak times. Another chapter is now beginning in Gulmmatt, the appeal of which should extend beyond the canton's borders, as Walter Lipp emphasizes: "This project shows how entrepreneurial development potential can be tapped step by step with far-sighted planning and thus meet the changing requirements of the future."

Zero emission: Gulmmatt becomes the centerpiece

In order to implement the cantonal waste management system with alternative drive systems from January 1, 2025, R. Hürlimann AG Transporte, together with SVP Cantonal Councillor Adrian Risi, Managing Director of Gulmmatt owner Risi Immobilien AG, has commissioned convoltas AG to develop a corresponding site solution to supply the eight fully electric refuse collection vehicles included in the project with electricity. The project includes the construction of a new transformer station and a charging station, as well as the optional integration of an energy storage system. There is 50 kW available for each vehicle. However, if required, these can also be charged more quickly at 150 - 180 kW, for example over lunchtime, to enable any intermediate charging for longer or additional trips. In terms of capacity utilization, the transformer station is capable of supplying 32 vehicles with electricity at the same time.

Area solutions as the key to electrification

The project in Gulmmatt was customized by R. Hürlimann AG Transporte and convoltas AG for waste tours in the canton of Zug. convoltas AG is providing support throughout the entire duration of the project and, with the help of the expected findings - within an estimated two years - is creating a blueprint for a scalable business model that makes site solutions for e-mobility possible. Martin Uhr explains: "The switch to alternative drive systems will make a significant contribution to reducing local CO2 emissions in the canton of Zug and is an important step towards a sustainable future."

Grid stability already planned

An energy storage system has already been planned to optimize the site's self-consumption. This would allow the solar power produced at the site to be stored. It is also used for load management and is therefore able to reduce peak loads. This means that consumption and solar power production can be controlled in line with the grid, which also secures the supply in the future and can counteract possible bottlenecks and emergency situations in the supply grid.
