Sustainable pipe systems: JRG Sanipex offers a greener alternative with Bio PE-X

For the JRG Sanipex portfolio, GF Building Flow Solutions relies exclusively on Bio PE-X pipe, which is made from 15 percent renewable raw materials and thus demonstrably reduces the CO2 footprint. The Bio PE-X pipe meets the highest quality standards - as the industry has come to expect from the Sanipex products that have been tried and tested for decades.

The Sanipex pipe-in-pipe system made of plastic for drinking water installations from JRG was an absolute innovation on the market in 1978. Since then, the system has been continuously adapted to market requirements and further developed technologically. Since 2024, the JRG, GF and Uponor brands have combined their expertise in the protection and management of drinking water quality and the design of energy-efficient buildings under the umbrella of GF's new division, GF Building Flow Solutions. GF Building Flow Solutions is now making the Bio PE-X pipe, which is made from 15 percent renewable raw materials, the standard for the JRG Sanipex system.

"With our products with a reduced ecological footprint, we offer our partners from the sanitary trade as well as the planning and architecture sectors the opportunity to positively influence the carbon footprint of buildings and position themselves as environmentally conscious players in the construction industry," says Udo Strache, Director, Hot & Cold Water Supply EMEA, GF Building Flow Solutions. "Because only together with our customers can we lead the construction industry into a more sustainable future."

With the Bio PE-X pipe, the system meets all the requirements of ecological building standards such as Minergie and Ecobau. The system certifications and approvals of the JRG Sanipex portfolio remain valid. "In addition, our customers can continue to rely on the proven Sanipex properties in the future: Interchangeability thanks to detachable and reusable connections, installation without electrical energy, a high standard of hygiene thanks to dead space-free flared connection technology, no additional sealing material required, and high resistance to corrosion and limescale," says Udo Strache. "For homeowners and planners, the hygienic safety and protection against legionella and bacteria pay off, as does the flexible use in building services, especially in the distribution of hot and cold water. Finally, extremely low pressure losses and low noise levels provide a great deal of comfort for end users."

Raw materials that are truly sustainable

The new Bio PE-X pipes contain 15 percent renewable raw materials (bio-based polyethylene). In contrast to other renewable raw materials, the pellets for the Bio PE-X pipes are obtained exclusively from by-products of vegetable oil production. This means that they do not compete with the production of food and animal feed.

Mass balance as an approach in production

The supply of renewable raw materials is based on the so-called mass balance approach. This means that for every tonne of ISCC-certified renewable raw materials used in production, a corresponding quantity of PEX pipes can be provided with an ISCC certificate. The use of ISCC-certified, bio-based materials helps to replace fossil resources with renewable raw materials. In addition, the ISCC certification is audited annually by independent third parties to ensure that all ISCC certification requirements are met.

The Bio PE-X pipe is compatible with both the JRG Sanipex pipe-in-pipe system for drinking water installations and the JRG Sanipex MT hygienic pipe connections.
